To improve our community by putting family valued principles into practice that enhance educational opportunities, foster a healthy environment, and improve the quality of life for all.
To use Finklea Community Center in Loris, SC as the central resource location for the community and surrounding rural areas by fully utilizing the 86,000 sq. foot building to house small retail businesses, a technology center and “hot spot”, a senior citizen day care, and other community-friendly activities that perpetuate economic development for the community and generate income to support the operation of the center.
Headquartered at Finklea Community Center, the Finklea Alumni Association is a community-based, 501(c)(3) organization serving the city of Loris and its surrounding small towns in rural Horry County, SC. The association began in 1993s as a large group of alumni from various graduation classes began meeting regularly to plan and schedule annual events. In November 2001, the group became a legal non-profit corporation in order to purchase their former school – Finklea High School – which served as both elementary and high schools for African Americans living in the Finklea, Loris, Green Sea, Cedar Creek, Duford and Bayboro neighborhoods.
The road to ownership of the building was brutal. The alumni association was forced to fight for equal access to a fair and impartial process. In 2004, the Horry County Board of Education finally recognized the alumni association as a legitimate community representative and solidified the sale of the property.
Now the Finklea Community Center, the former school enables the alumni organization to provide family support services and programs in a safe and convenient location.
